GitHub Support cannot bypass 2FA for security reasons. Prevention is your only protection against account lockout!

🚨Preventing an Emergency - DO THIS NOW

Complete this checklist immediately to prevent being locked out and losing access to your account:

• Download and securely store your recovery codes (Settings → Password and authentication → Two-factor authentication)
• Set up multiple 2FA methods (don't rely on just one)
• Test your backup methods before you need them
• Store recovery codes in multiple secure locations (password manager, encrypted file, secure physical location)
• Enable at least one hardware/device-based method (security key, passkey, or device biometrics)

🆘 Common 2FA Problems & Solutions

1. Authenticator code is incorrect

Symptoms: Your TOTP app generates codes but GitHub rejects them

Solutions:

1. Check time synchronization:

   • Go to your authenticator app settings
   • Look for "Time correction" or "Sync time"
   • Force a time sync
   • Try generating a new code

2. Verify you're using the right account:

   • Check if you have multiple GitHub entries in your authenticator
   • Look for account labels or email addresses
   • Delete duplicate/old entries

3. Use recovery codes:

   • Go to GitHub login → "Having problems?" → "Use a recovery code"
   • Enter one of your saved recovery codes
   • Immediately generate new recovery codes after login

4. Lost access to phone/authenticator device

If you have recovery codes:

1. Use a recovery code to login
2. Immediately set up new 2FA methods
3. Generate new recovery codes

If no recovery codes:

• Account may be permanently inaccessible
• GitHub Support cannot bypass 2FA for security reasons

1. Multiple Authentication Methods

Set up at least 3 different methods:

I have raised a support ticket 3 weeks ago about multiple accounts and 2FA recovery (specifically on identifying which recovery codes apply to which account) which has fallen on deaf ears. I imagine because:

1. I am on the free tier
2. The github support bot doesn't have an immediate answer.

Note: I'd love to make this note as my personal github user, but unfortunately I'm locked out and have no connections with people at Github to make a difference.

I'd also love it if falling into a gap of an automated support flow didn't also impact my business reputation (hopefully only slightly, as non techs are my target audience) but from a branding perspective, every public interaction counts....

Hi @nrdevau, I am sorry to hear you're locked out. According to the official guide above, GitHub Support cannot bypass 2FA for security reasons.

If you haven't already, you might want to check if you have:

SSH keys or Personal Access Tokens (PATs) associated with your account, as Support can only assist if you have these.

Access to any verified device where you might still be logged in.

If all recovery methods fail, the guide suggests you may need to unlink your email address and create a new account to regain access to your email for GitHub. Hope this helps!

Minor copy issue relating to Github 2FA: On the 2FA page when I was logging in, it said to "Authenticate using the your passkey or security key." "The passkey" or "your passkey" would be correct here, IMO, but not both.

Hello everyone, I'm new here and have the following issue:

I have set up 2FA, but when I try to create a ticket, it still prompts SMS Verification!? I have also tried to register an SMS 2FA but its not working in my area as it gives me errors when hitting the send button. It seems there is no way I can reach the support team.

Any idea how to resolve this or contact the support team other way will be much appreciate it.

If you’ve lost access to your two-factor authentication (2FA) credentials, you can regain access to your account by using your recovery codes or another recovery option. Please visit GitHub’s Virtual Assistant to explore your available options.
